Major challenges

The process of designing StethoMe, an electronic stethoscope, was an intricate web of complex challenges and innovative solutions. The crux of the project revolved around the acoustic chamber, the pivotal element that affected the sound quality and the accuracy of readings. It required careful isolation to prevent external sounds from infiltrating and skewing the results.

An early design consideration was to add to this device a thermometer. However, the available non-touch thermometer modules did not meet the precision criteria and we droped this idea. However, before that happened, I decided that adopting the device height of 36.6 mm to work out all proportions would be a nice reference to the ideal symbolizing the correct body temperature.

The project unveiled an intriguing dual-user perspective. The device was used by the parent and experienced by the child, necessitating a distinct approach for each side. The parent-facing side needed to exhibit precision and technological sophistication, while the child-facing side had to be tender and comforting. To achieve this, a soft, gentle rubber layer was integrated around the membrane ring.

The versatility of StethoMe was highlighted during the pandemic when it was adapted for use with wireless earphones, enabling medics in protective suits to examine patients from a safe distance. This modification became crucial during a time when contact had to be minimized.

Designing StethoMe demonstrated the complex and fulfilling nature of industrial design. The objective isn't merely to create visually appealing products; it's about crafting technical solutions that empathize with its users and serve meaningful purposes. It's about the joy derived from contributing to life-saving tools and the responsibility that accompanies such creation.
